Tom Cruz, Electrical Engineer at IBM Corporation

His advice to students: “You need to enjoy what you’re doing. I think that’s more important than salary.”

He worked 17 years for IBM. He prefer to stay technical and not to work in managerial area because it’s a lot more fun on technical side. He say that in managerial area you have to deal more with personnel problems and you have to go to a lot of meetings, but now he just has to go to one meeting per week and keep open communication with colleagues to get the work done.

Cruz worked for IBM enough time to see significant changes that took place. One of them is the rise of personal computer. The other is that he saw three rounds of downsizing in his organisation. He was lucky that he was not fired, but he felt bad for those fired.
